Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing behemoth founded by Jeff Bezos, has undoubtedly carved out a significant share of the cloud market. It provides essential services like Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to industry giants such as Netflix, Twitch, LinkedIn, and Facebook, among others. With its vast computing power and market dominance, AWS generates billions in revenue, rivaling competitors like Microsoft Azure in areas like cloud computing and machine learning.
Quantifying AWS's Footprint
While precise figures are challenging to obtain, third-party evaluations shed light on AWS's remarkable footprint. According to Gartner, a renowned research and advisory firm, AWS was estimated to be 5 to 10 times larger than the combined 14 next largest competitors in 2014 and 2015. Although these numbers may have fluctuated in recent years, AWS's dominance is expected to continue its upward trajectory.
Estimating AWS's Infrastructure
To illustrate AWS's infrastructure scale, consider the following estimates:
AWS currently operates approximately 16 geographic regions worldwide.
Each region comprises 2 or more Availability Zones (AZs).
Each AZ consists of 1 to 6 data centers.
Each data center houses between 40,000 and 80,000 servers.
These figures highlight the sheer magnitude of AWS's global infrastructure, enabling it to cater to a vast array of customers and services.
Powering the Internet
AWS's impact on the internet is staggering. According to W3Techs, a web technology survey provider, AWS hosts approximately 4.7% of all websites globally. This translates to hosting around 1.8 billion hostnames and 178 million websites on its platform.
When considering the top 10,000 websites ranked by Alexa, AWS's presence becomes even more pronounced. However, it's important to note that companies like Rackspace also host a significant portion of the largest e-commerce retailers, many of which compete with Amazon.
The Indispensable Cloud Provider
The hypothetical scenario of AWS going offline highlights its critical role in powering the modern internet and digital infrastructure. Such an event would have far-reaching and potentially catastrophic consequences, including:
A substantial portion of the web disappearing instantly.
Governments across multiple countries experiencing severe service failures.
Businesses losing their online presence, leading to potential financial ruin.
Overloaded court systems due to lawsuits against companies reliant on AWS services.
Stock market volatility, as many exchanges rely on AWS for back-office operations.
Disruption of popular services like Netflix.
This underscores the importance of having contingency plans and backup architectures in place, utilizing multiple cloud providers to mitigate the risk of complete service disruption.
As the demand for cloud computing and digital services continues to soar, AWS's dominance is likely to persist. Organizations seeking to leverage the power of AWS would benefit greatly from pursuing AWS certifications, which validate their expertise and ability to design, deploy, and manage AWS-based solutions effectively. Reputable training providers like SPOTO Club offer comprehensive preparation courses and resources to help professionals achieve AWS certifications and stay ahead in the ever-evolving cloud computing landscape.

I have summarized the AWS cloud computing training paths which would be including the duration and effort it takes to achieve the certifications. If you wish to learn more about the contents, take a look at the Understanding the AWS Well-Architected Framework and the AWS Training Paths to Become Certified. I would also recommend you to check out the training courses, which are being offered at the SPOTO AWS Certification Modules.
AWS Cloud Practitioner
This certification is the easiest of all AWS cloud certifications and focuses on fundamental knowledge that for instance managers, sales employees, or finance people need. If you do not have deeper technical skills or you just want to gain basic knowledge about the AWS cloud, this certification is just right for you. On top, the training course itself just takes six hours and is for free. After completing the training, you can take the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, which is an exam of 1.5 hours for a fee of 100 USD. This exam include 65 questions.
AWS Solutions Architect
This certification focuses on how to develop applications and solutions from a technical point of view. To be eligible to start with this path, you either need to be a certified AWS Cloud Practitioner or you need to participate in a one-day workshop AWS Technical Essentials, in which you would be learning about the basics as well as requirements to take business decisions for IT solutions. The core of this certification is a three-days onsite course called Architecting on AWS. After completion, an additional four-hours exam preparation course can be taken in which the exam structure, mock-up exams, and practical tips are discussed. The exam that you are then allowed to take is the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate. It is important to note that the level Associate stands for the lower level out of two, where the higher level is called Professional and requires to take further courses.
The course is called Advanced Architecting on AWS and is another three-days onsite training. Also after this training, there is a one-day exam preparation course available before you take the exam AWS Certified Solution Architect – Professional, which has a length of 170 minutes.
AWS Developer
The developer role would be focusing on the software development for AWS cloud itself. Similar to the AWS Solutions Architect, the certification path starts with a three-days training called Developing on AWS and is followed by a four-hour exam preparation. The Associate level of the AWS Certified Developer is reached after an 80-minute exam. If you want to proceed on that path, you can take your way towards the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional. As this part of the path is the same for the AWS Developer and the AWS Operations, I will explain it further below for the AWS Operations path.
How long will it take?
This is a natural question. Passing the exam requires being well prepared, and how long that takes depends on where you start.
On average, I would be recommending you to approximately spend 80 hours of preparation for the Solution Architect – Associate Exam, as long as you have some AWS experience. This would be including study across all of your resources, which would be including our Solutions Architect Learning Path, as well as any other resources that you choose. With a full-time job as well as other commitments, investing 80 hours of study would usually take you about two months. If you would be entirely new to AWS, I would recommend approximately 120 hours or three months for the preparation. You should start with the fundamentals and later move to the Solutions Architect Associate Learning Path.
If you wish to pass certification exam, you could have it through the SPOTO AWS Online Training and practice exams.

Certifications would be considered as quite a controversial topic in IT Field. Some argue that obtaining certification would be able to make you more marketable, while others think that they might have a negative impact by giving the impression that you would be just compensating for the lack of experience. Obtaining an IT Certification has opened many doors for me and it might have set me apart from other candidates. So, if you too are choosing this certification, you could have it through the SPOTO Club, as I have joined.

AWS is Becoming the Gold Standard of the Cloud Quickly
AWS is considered to be leading the pack in almost every aspect. According to Gartner, Amazon’s cloud would be considered to be 10 times bigger than its next 14 competitors, combined as one! This is bad news for the folks who are at Azure and Google Cloud Platform but it is great news for you.
Whether you’re a web developer, a system admin, a database admin, an IoT developer, a Big Data analyst, an AI developer and the list goes on and on, your life would be made much easier if you would be taking advantage of Amazon’s platform. Their offerings touch almost each and every aspect of technology, and discussing them would be outside the scope of this article. They would be constantly adding more offerings as well as innovating in a way that is leaving the competition in the dust.
AWS Certifications Are Feasible and Within Reach
Unlike other vendors, Amazon would be offering a realistic certification path that doesn’t require highly specialized and expensive training to start. I am not saying that it might be very easy to get certified, but you won’t behave to quit your job and pay for expensive training to get your first AWS certification.
The most common approach would be to start with the Certified Solutions Architect Associate. It is considered to be a great way to get familiar with the AWS ecosystem as well as core services. You would be required to have an associate certificate before you would be able to sit for the professional or specialty exams. Moreover, AWS would be required that you would have your Solutions Architect associate certificate before you could take the Solutions Architect professional test, or that you have your Developer or SysOps Associate certificate before you would be able to sit for the DevOps Professional test.
AWS Skills Are in High Demand as well as Pay Top Money
With that being said, please remember that if you just gain the AWS Solutions Architect certification, it wouldn’t automatically mean that you would be making the annual salary indicated in the table above. Many other factors would be at play here, including your other skills, experience, geographic location, etc. The point is, proving to potential employers or existing employers that you would be competent in using Amazon’s cloud offerings. Also, you would have a great positive impact on your career.
About a week ago, I was able to clear my AWS SysOps Administrator exam after clearing both the Solutions Architect and the Developer exams. I am currently exploring opportunities, so this would be the true test of whether this effort would be paid off. Regardless of what the result is, I would feel that I have truly gained a unique set of skills that would be very handy in my side projects and future career opportunities.
So, if you too wish to gain this certification like me, I would suggest you gain the training, which I got at the SPOTO AWS Online Training Modules.
